My Brother the Devil

Today we finished the film 'My Brother the Devil', and we started to analyse it and look at the stereotypes and qualities of  gang life. We looked at how Rash and his brother and how they were portrayed together and what the director wanted us to see between them. The stereotypes of the youth culture in this film are of the young people being thugs/criminals as a part of their everyday life. We saw the struggle that the younger brother had of trying to keep up with his older brother and looking up to him as a role model and someone to aspire to be. The film follows both brothers and the way they choose to go about their life, whilst unknowingly affecting the other ones life.

Gang life is portrayed as something to be desired as they can grant you protection and a sense of family. However the film shows its other side with lots of violence, friends losing friends and no rules of combat, making the gang life show for what it really is, scary and unsafe, especially when young people get dragged into it.
